Review: I had pretty high hopes for it from what I saw from the trailers. I dont lean one way or the other when it comes to Abrams, some of his stuff I like, some of it I dont. Super 8 is one that I loved.
In the current era of CGI laden, souldead adventure flicks, Super 8 distinguishes itself by having heart. There is an authenticity to those kids in the film, a familiarity in their conversations. It reminded me of when I was a kid. It was like ET meets Goonies meets The Sandlot. And the film that they are trying to make within the film, and their obsession with “production values” draws a lot of laughs.
The friendship between the kids in the film really resonates, and the emotional elements of the film totally deliver. One of the most poignant scenes in the film has nothing to do with whats in the train car, or the air force, and anything like that….rather, its a scene that takes place in Joes bedroom as he sits on the floor talking to Alice.
Now, as much as I loved the film, it is not without some flaws, mostly in continuity. Also, I would have liked a little more exposition for some of the characters, I would love to know more about Alices father. That being said, I am forgiving on those things because the movie hits its mark everywhere else.
Surely it will draw its comparisons to ET, and the other early Spielberg works, but those comparisons will always be unfair. Those films came at a different time. And the people who see Super 8 today, have changed since they first saw ET, or any of those other films. I am just glad the generation of younger people will have this as a generational film for them, as I had with those other great adventure films.
All in all, Super 8 was a terrific film experience, that will leave you with a smile on your face.
I thought Super 8 was interesting, it was a new type of funny movie, and a smart one as well. After that it all went downhill. I saw 3 movies too many. Now I cannot bear to even watch this movie again, but, apparently there are still people out there that can enjoy a movie like this and I am glad they can.
The two great things about Super 8 are the look and the acting. When I say look I am referring to everything from the costumes and makeup all the way to the photography combining to capture the look of the time perfectly. The soundtrack is also pretty good too as you would expect!
This film was absolutely phenomenal. Already seen it three times. Loved the comics and this was the most satisfying adaptation I’ve ever seen mixed with the directors personal charm and tweaks. Super 8 was just beautiful to watch and so fun to be a part of as an audience. LOVED IT.

Super 8 is a genuinely great movie– disappointing summer aside. It’s more refreshing, perhaps, due to the fact that this season has been so stark, but Super 8 easily deserves praise all on its own merits rather than by lack of good competition.

Super 8 combines parts of Pocahontas and Braveheart that has a liberal dose of Room Marines into an epic entire that requires almost 3 complete hours to unfold. We could criticise that length, the weak story plus the hammy dialogue. We could attack its thinly-veiled ecological message or even the frankly bizarre spirituality in its second fifty percent but honestly absolutely nothing can spoil the encounter even while that youre enveloped in it. As well as a big component of thats down on the brilliant use of 3D – that is both subtle and exceptionally powerful. Til now, we happen to be producing films with 3D factors, Avatar will be the 1st seriously 3D movie and may nicely prove being single on the most substantial points to occur to blockbuster film-making as Super 8.
